Late Friday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a temporary restraining order that bars Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from carrying out roving immigration raids across Southern California that target undocumented immigrants solely based on their appearance.
As the issue has roiled communities here, a new coalition of business, labor, faith and philanthropy leaders across Los Angeles are coming together with one voice to call for a stop to the unconstitutional immigration enforcement practices that are harming families, destabilizing communities and threatening the economic fabric of the state.
CA For U.S. includes more than 20 organizations including the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, SEIU United Service Workers West, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Latino Community Foundation.
“Reasonable minds can differ about what our federal immigration priorities ought to be, but when employees feel unsafe, customers stay home, families are disrupted, and uncertainty replaces stability, everyone suffers – regardless of immigration status,” according to a joint statement from the coalition. Los Angeles is a city of migrants in a state of migrants — one-third of LA County residents were born outside the U.S., and half of all children in the County have at least one immigrant parent. Yet, in neighborhoods and job sites across the region, immigrant families — including long-standing members of our workforce — are facing military-style ICE raids, often without warrants and in public view.
These immigration enforcement actions traumatize children and families, destabilize entire neighborhoods, and undermine trust in democratic institutions. They also create ripple effects that threaten key industries and employers across the state, from agriculture and construction to healthcare, hospitality, and logistics.
A poll commissioned by the California Community Foundation earlier this year found that 82% of California voters, across party lines, support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants – highlighting the urgency for comprehensive federal immigration reform that reflects both economic reality and American values.
From health care to hospitality, agriculture to construction, retail to logistics, immigrants — including those without citizenship or official residency — power every major sector of California’s economy.
“Our streets and neighborhoods have become the frontlines for fear, but instead should be places where all residents can live and work without intimidation,” said California Community Foundation President and CEO Miguel A. Santana. “We remain committed to calling for just and humane immigration policies that respect the rights and dignity of everyone. We urge federal agencies to refocus their resources on real threats, and to respect the constitutional values that define our nation.”
