Our History

Since 1915, the California Community Foundation (CCF) has been shaping and strengthening Los Angeles communities through the dedication and generosity of visionary donors. Ultimately, we understand that every dollar we receive and grant represents a donor’s legacy, a dream for lasting change and a chance to bring that dream to life.

Founded to Drive Change

As established by our founder, the late Joe Sartori, CCF is rooted in initiative, action and ambitious social change. Sartori – the head of Security Pacific Bank – was a trailblazer, leading an institution that was only the second in the United States to offer its customers a community foundation. He launched it with a goal of raising $1 million, and he delivered: With his passing in 1946, Sartori created a legacy fund of $1 million that is still active today.

A Reflection of Our Community​

Throughout our history, CCF has adapted to reflect the needs and interests of the community. For our first 65 years, the foundation, affectionately known as the “typewriter foundation,” made grants mostly for equipment and capital. Over the decades, CCF has evolved to develop a reputation for innovative philanthropy and leadership in the community.

As we’ve grown, CCF has maintained long-held traditions: transparency, honoring donor intent and exercising fiduciary responsibility. It’s just one reason why our funds endure and our donors stay with us through generations.
