Our homelessness crisis is a symptom of the larger affordable housing crisis. The latest homeless count results, released on June 29, 2023, document a 10% increase in the numbers of our unhoused neighbors, numbers will continue to grow unless we build more affordable housing.
The 4th Annual Los Angeles Immigration Summit (Summit) was a two-day, in-person convening that bolstered the power of L.A.’s immigrant communities. The Summit built on the collaborative effort between the California Community Foundation, the USC Equity Research Institute, the Council on Immigrant Inclusion, and the Immigrants Are LA coalition, that includes stakeholders from business, labor, community-based organizations, local government, funders, and other sectors.

Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day, highlighting the resilience and struggles of our country through uncertain times. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of more than 250,000 enslaved people on June 19, 1865, when 2,000 Union soldiers arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, and proclaimed the freedom of enslaved people in Texas.
On March 10, the Pajaro River levee failed due to the heavy rainstorms brought on by California’s series of atmospheric rivers and flooded the town of Pajaro in Monterey County. Over 2,000 residents, largely low-income migrant farm workers and their families have been forced to evacuate due to the widespread destruction. As of March 17, community members have yet to return to their homes due to long delays and many are concerned about how additional rains this week may worsen the flooding.
In February 2021, the L.A. County Chief Sustainability Office, Annenberg Foundation, CCF, and Weingart Foundation came together to support a motion to pilot the Los Angeles County Food Equity Roundtable (LACFER) - a committee of cross-sector leaders dedicated to achieving equity in food systems across L.A. County.
