Bilingual online clearinghouse provides Los Angeles’ immigrant community with the information resources they need to protect and empower themselves
LOS ANGELES,CA — A cross sector coalition has come together to address concerns from immigrant communities in Los Angeles about new immigration enforcement policies and actions. The coalition, comprised of Mayor Eric Garcetti and other public officials, immigrant advocacy organizations, and Spanish-language media groups, is launching the www.protegete.us website, which will serve as a resource hub for immigrant communities, as part of the ¡Protégete!…¡EmpodérateYa! (Protect Yourself! Empower Yourself!) campaign.
The ¡Protégete!…¡Empodérate Ya! website is one of the most comprehensive clearinghouses of information resources in English and Spanish. The goal of the site is to ensure immigrants know their rights and to provide information on how they can empower themselves rather than live in fear.
“Immigration is at the heart of the American story, because people from everywhere have made immeasurable contributions to the diversity, ingenuity, and cultural richness that define who we are. That is especially true in Los Angeles, and people who have made a home here deserve all of the resources and protection their City can provide,” said Mayor Garcetti. “No one in Los Angeles should live in fear of being taken from their home, or separated from their family. I will never stop fighting to protect all Angelenos, and making sure they are given the support they need and deserve.”
“More than ever it’s time for Hispanics to act by getting informed,” said Manuel Abud, President and CEO, Azteca America. “At Azteca we pride ourselves on our ability to build bridges and establish alliances across the industry, and we are driven by our commitment to serve the U.S. Hispanic community. The ¡Protégete!…¡Empodérate Ya! coalition is a great example of how all of us can work together in order to properly serve our dear community to empower themselves rather than live in fear.”
“There’s a difference between being afraid and taking action to protect oneself and one’s family and being afraid and remaining in the shadows. We came to this country because of a dream for a better life and we will continue fighting to make that dream possible. There’s resources, information, support available for immigrant families facing the unthinkable right now; take action, you are not alone,” stated Angelica Salas, CHIRLA Executive Director.
The ¡Protégete!…¡Empodérate Ya! campaign stems from the successful ¡Protégete!…¡Ciudadanía Ya! (Protect Yourself! Citizenship Now!) campaign, which drove citizenship education and application efforts in 2015 and 2016.
The ¡Protégete!…¡Empodérate Ya! campaign is led by a strong coalition that includes Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia; the Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), the Council of Mexican Federations (COFEM), Asian Americans Advancing Justice Los Angeles (AAAJ-LA), the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), the California Immigrant Policy Center, the National Immigration Law Center (NILC), the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California; and Spanish-language outlets Azteca America, Entravision, Estrella TV/Liberman Broadcasting, La Opinión, Telemundo 52 Los Angeles KVEA, Univision Radio and KMEX 34 Univision Los Angeles.
The campaign is made possible through funding support from the California Community Foundation.

LOS ANGELES – March 7, 2017 – The California Community Foundation (CCF) will immediately award $1.4 million in rapid response grants to 19 organizations as part of its coordinated commitment to immigrant inclusion and protection.
These grants deliver critical support to organizations providing impacted communities with Know Your Rights workshops, legal representation, policy advocacy and citizenship. The goal is to offer the highest level of protection to immigrant families in need.
The recently issued immigration executive orders do not represent our nation’s core values of liberty, justice and due process. These policies threaten to upend the lives of some our most vulnerable community members.
“Los Angeles is a tribute to the power and positive impact of immigration. The creativity and prosperity that define our region stem directly from the incredible diversity of cultures and voices that represent it. Because we are a welcoming community, the world’s best, brightest and most dedicated call our region home,” said California Community Foundation President and CEO Antonia Hernández. “We are proud to support the organizations working tirelessly to ensure all people have access to legal services and the due process they rightly deserve.”
The funding is part of the California Community Foundation’s broader public/private collaboration with other foundations like Weingart Foundation, The California Endowment, James Irvine Foundation and local governments like Los Angeles County and the City of Los Angeles. The collaboration seeks to leverage the collective resources of the philanthropic and public sectors to respond to immediate community needs across the City and County.
As the Administration increases its detention and deportation efforts, Los Angeles County communities stand to be among the hardest hit; not just socially, but economically as immigrant workers represent more than 40 percent of the region’s overall labor force.
Our collective wellbeing and economic power is inextricably linked to the past, present and future contributions of immigrants.
Strengthening immigrant communities is part of CCF’s long history of working to support the inclusion of all people in the civic and economic fabric of Los Angeles. CCF is committed to helping more new Americans integrate and thrive so together we can build a stronger and more prosperous future for all Angelenos.

Foundations Unite to Oppose Immigration Executive Orders
This statement was originally published by Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR).
Statement
The United States stands at a historical crossroads. Founded as a refuge from religious persecution and built by generations of immigrants, our country has been the standard bearer internationally for the assertion and protection of inalienable rights and freedoms, a beacon of hope for refugees facing oppression and persecution, and a land of opportunity for immigrants seeking a better life for themselves and their families.
As philanthropic institutions, we have built our missions on this proud and rich tradition. We have invested in creating healthy communities, promoting diversity and inclusion, building a vibrant democracy, and advancing equity and equality for all people, regardless of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender expression, immigration status, and national origin.
The recently issued immigration executive orders compromise our nation’s founding principles and the Constitution, our standing in the world, and our core values of liberty, justice, and due process. They weaken our moral leadership, fuel the efforts of those who wish us ill, harm our global competitiveness, and fray our social fabric.
Our foundations support diverse issues, strategies, and communities across the country, but we are united in the belief that immigrants and refugees are integral to every aspect of our society. Newcomers enrich our culture and tradition as artists, playwrights, and dancers. Naturalized citizens strengthen our civic life as voters, jurors, school-board members, and elected officials. Immigrant entrepreneurs and refugee-owned businesses revitalize neighborhoods, towns, and cities across America. Foreign-born scientists and engineers fuel innovations and help our country prosper. Farmworkers put food on our tables, and caregivers nurture our children, care for our elders, and nurse our ill. Young newcomers—including DACA beneficiaries—demonstrate their patriotism and enthusiasm for American ideals in schools, communities, workplaces, and the armed forces. Without the contributions of immigrants and refugees now and throughout our history, our collective wellbeing and economic vitality would be greatly diminished.
We, the undersigned philanthropies, join public officials, the faith community, business leaders, and the American public in supporting policies that protect our national security, strengthen our economy, and uphold core American values. We stand with our grantees—advocates, organizers, researchers, and service providers—in calling for policies that reflect our nation’s founding principles, promote cohesion and inclusion, instill hope, and show compassion. Policies that recognize our global interdependence, that honor our tradition of welcoming those seeking refuge and a better life, and that keep families together will make our communities stronger, safer, and more prosperous.
We expect additional challenges in the weeks and months ahead on the immigration front, including expanded detention and deportations, and on policies affecting the rights of women, African Americans, the LGBTQ community, and other vulnerable groups. The issues, communities, and core values that our foundations have sought to advance are under serious and imminent danger. With history and morality as our guide, we reject discriminatory policies that target individuals based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender expression, and other grounds. We stand committed to the inherent value and dignity of every person at home and abroad. We stand together for the American Dream.
