Artist’s Statement
I am an artist, an educator, an activist and an instigator. Although I work in a variety of mediums, experimental analog filmmaking has been my primary focus for the past dozen years, both individually and as part of my work with Echo Park Film Center and the EPFC Filmmobile.
My work is grounded in community collaboration and public exchange. It celebrates the extraordinary in the everyday and the inherent creativity in everybody. I’m inspired by intimate, handmade artwork of all kinds. In the film realm, my influences include silent movies, home movies, amateur travelogues, diary films, direct animation, scratched emulsion, multiple projections, toy cameras, cinematic chain letters, plant-based processing, visual music, day for night, shaggy dog stories, found footage, film bees, eccentricities, epiphanies, accidents, coincidences, crossroads and common threads. It’s about process over product, technique over technology, collectivism over capitalism, and Do It Together over Do It Yourself. It’s about scale and place and possibility.
The films I make and the films I love are devices of wonder. The magic of the moving image is a catalyst that activates individuals and transforms communities.
