Fritz HaegArtist’s Statement

My work has included edible gardens, public dances, educational environments, domestic gatherings, urban parades, temporary encampments, landscape restorations, documentary videos, publications, animal architecture and occasionally structures for people. Recent projects include Edible Estates – an international series of domestic edible gardens; Animal Estates – a housing initiative for native wildlife in cities around the world; and Sundown Schoolhouse – an itinerant experimental educational program. My work often involves collaborations with urban residents to develop projects that explore the world we want, which is juxtaposed against the world that we have. I am usually more interested in the relationships between things, than any particular thing in isolation. The objects, environments and installations that I create are vehicles for something alive, a garden, a dance, an animal, a gathering of people, which is more important than the physical artifacts.
