The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Los Angeles County is a member organization comprised of attorneys, judges, legal professionals, and law students throughout Los Angeles County. It is a voice for issues of concern to the Asian Pacific American community. APABA organizes and co-sponsors events and programs that assist underserved communities, promote civil justice, and foster professional development, mentorship, and community.
APABA awards a Public Interest Fellowship annually to a law student who demonstrates leadership potential, maturity, and responsibility, as well as a commitment to contributing to the Asian/Pacific Islander American community. The APABA Public Interest Fellow receives a grant to spend at least 8 weeks of his or her summer working at a nonprofit public interest organization or governmental agency that provides free legal services to low-income individuals and/or families in Los Angeles County. Special consideration is given to applicants working on issues impacting the APIA community.
The Fellowship Fund is maintained by the California Community Foundation (CCF) and is funded by contributions from our installation dinner sponsors and generous individual donors like yourself.

June 12th, 2023 marks the fourth anniversary since a drunk driver took our precious Ruby and Hart from us. Since those horrific, earliest days we’ve been searching for the best way to honor their legacies of joy, empathy, and kindness through some form of lasting philanthropy. We’ve come to realize that many of their talents and interests, from Ruby’s art and short stories to Hart’s ridiculous improvised characters and love of acting, began in very early childhood with an activity that most of us take for granted: reading and being read to. Ruby and Hart’s full but far too short lives were profoundly enriched by stories and characters that fueled their imaginations and filled their hearts.
Since publishing her first childrens’ novel, Gail has had the privilege of working with Writers and Artists Across the Country, an incredible organization that brings authors of childrens’ literature into underserved schools across the nation. Authors give their time, and WAAC provides every child with their own copy of the author’s book. Gail has seen firsthand the excitement that her visits have brought, and the way students’ beautiful faces light up when they’re given their very own copy to take home. Your donations will go toward sending authors into underserved schools all over the country with giant boxes of books, each of which will contain a Ruby and Hart Foundation bookplate. Students will be able to experience the joy of writing their name in their very own book.
Our goal is to raise $250,000 dollars so The Ruby and Hart Foundation can become a fully endowed fund that can meaningfully contribute to WAAC and organizations like it in perpetuity. We’re doing this under the umbrella of the California Community Fund. Please help us fulfill this ambitious and meaningful goal by giving generously. In Support Of
Ocean Conservation, Music and Military/Veterans
Robert K. Wrede, Esq. (Bob to friends and Rob to family) was passionate about music, the ocean and veterans. He reveled in telling stories about attending the Metropolitan Opera as a boy and knew the libretto of every major work. He surfed, kayaked and dove the majority of his life and continued boogie boarding until his early 70s. Rob was committed to veterans’ causes. He was a Captain in the Army, 82nd Airborne, graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and attended Cornell Law School as a veteran.
Rob had exceptional oratory skills and thrived in his chosen career as a trial attorney representing international corporations, professionals, actors and entertainment executives with zeal. His deep, robust voice and physique made him a force to reckon with in the courtroom.
Later in his career Rob shifted from “warrior” to “peacemaker.” He was awarded the first Master In Laws degree (L.L.M.) at the prestigious Strauss Institute of Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School where he was an adjunct professor. As he grew older and wiser, he found he was extremely adept at resolving matters via mediation and reconciliation. It was not unusual for him to arrive home and report that the plaintiff and defendant were hugging one another at the end of the day.
Rob is survived by his wife Ranlyn Tilley Hill Wrede and their children Kendrick Randolph Wrede and Kendlyn Mercedes Wrede; and his adult children Christian Kendrick Wrede (Jason Szabo) and Suzanne Wrede, their mother Joan De Flumeri Wrede and his and Joan’s grandson Bastian Wrede. Rob believed each of his family members to be extraordinary. He was openly proud of them.
Robert Kendrick Wrede, aged 83, passed on June 24, 2023 as the sounds of classical music and opera hung suspended in the air.
Contributions will support Ocean Conservation, Music and Veterans in the places he lived, had friends, and returned to again and again. (Los Angeles/Santa Monica, Marin County, Ithaca and Sun Valley).

The Asrat Foundation is a non-profit whose mission is to empower women and survivors of sexual trauma & domestic violence through education, microenterprise programs and the arts.
Its initial project was a girls education program in Ethiopia, which is currently in its second year of subsidizing the school fees, room and board, books, uniforms, tutors and school supplies for 20 high school students and 1 college student in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. Without this program, these girls would not have been able to complete high school and/or college simply due to a lack of access and resources.
In November 2020, a war was induced in Ethiopia by outside forces and hundreds of women were sexually assaulted by mercenaries. In collaboration with a local grassroots organization, the Asrat Foundation subsidized a microenterprise program for 25 survivors of weaponized rape in Shewa Robit, Ethiopia. The one year program provides start-up capital, training and support for the women to set up a small business in Shewa Robit, Ethiopia.
The Asrat DAF at CCF provides grants to various organizations including non-profits focused on historical preservation in California, poverty alleviation in Ethiopia, reparations for African Americans, and scholarships for disadvantaged students globally.
The foundation plans to get involved in the areas of mental health and the arts.

The Warren Christopher Scholarship Fund was established in 1992 with a gift by the partners of O’Melveny & Myers LLP to honor Warren Christopher, its former chairman and senior partner, when he was appointed U.S. Secretary State. Secretary Christopher passed away on March 18, 2011, at the age of 85, but his willingness to help others and his enthusiasm for public service live on in the scholarship program that bears his name. LAUSD students are the only students eligible for this scholarship.
Scholarship Eligibility Criteria. Each LAUSD high school can nominate only one qualified candidate each year for possible designation as a Christopher Scholar. To be eligible for scholarship consideration, the student candidates must:
- Be a 10th-grade student for whom this designation, honor, and scholarship will make a decided difference – and who is more likely to remain in school if he or she receives it.
- Have a grade-point-average of 3.25 or higher from the 9th grade and through the first semester of 10th grade.
- Have demonstrated financial need; EOP criteria may serve as a guide.
- Have demonstrated a commitment to school and/or community involvement.

Deadline 1: By 11:59 p.m. on February 17, 2026 (form opens January 20) – identify the ONE student who will submit the scholarship application from your school. Please be sure to notify the student of their nomination and provide the support materials, application link and password.

With Santa Monica’s long history of helping people in need, in 2020 the City established We Are Santa Monica Fund, a public-private partnership that, since its inception, has raised over $1.6 million with more than 80 organizations receiving grants. The We Are Santa Monica Fund provides a critical and timely vehicle for neighbor-to-neighbor support, as members of our community struggle to get by, put food on the table and care for their loved ones. Equally important, addressing racial equity and providing access to programs and services that enhance the community are an essential part of our commitment.
During the pandemic, the Fund helped to underwrite essential needs and continues to provide incremental funds to local not-for-profit service organizations.
While the City of Santa Monica has ultimate fiduciary responsibility for the Fund, grantmaking decisions are made by the We Are Santa Monica Fund Advisory Board. These individuals live and/or work in Santa Monica and participate in an application process to voluntarily participate on the Advisory Board. All grant applications are thoroughly reviewed by the Advisory Board with decisions based on a number of factors.
We Are Santa Monica Fund is a partnership among private donors, the City of Santa Monica and the California Community Foundation (CCF). All donations to We Are Santa Monica Fund are received and managed by CCF. We Are Santa Monica Fund’s Advisory Board makes recommendations to CCF regarding distributions to eligible nonprofits, or, in certain cases, City programs that benefit the community.

Established by MABA in 2013, the Judicial Externship Program (“JEP”) secures judicial externships for a select group of law students and provides them invaluable experience in our federal and state courts. Selected scholarship recipients undergo a rigorous selection process, wherein they must demonstrate an intention to practice in Los Angeles after their graduation and a commitment to community service and the Latina/o community. Participants work full-time in chambers for eight weeks, conducting research, drafting legal memoranda and orders, and attending proceedings. They also receive a $2,500 scholarship. MABA attorneys who clerked for federal and state court judges offer them a series of lunch-time seminars, as well as monitor their progress throughout the summer.
The JEP was started to provide qualifying students an opportunity that many would not otherwise have in the competitive environment of judicial externships. Participants have used this invaluable experience to bolster their chances of obtaining various legal positions, including judicial clerkships. Several past participants have gone on to clerk for federal and state court judges, including on the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
