Coby Cares Foundation

Mission
To positively impact the health, wellness and quality of life for children locally and globally.

Vision
Coby Cares Foundation joined with the California Community Foundation in 1989 with one goal in mind: Helping Kids. Coby Cares was founded by David Brubaker in honor of his late wife, Coby Stockard Brubaker, and he runs it with their son, Jay Brubaker. Dave has been a long-time donor to a variety of non-profit organizations, serving on the Board of Vitamin Angels as well as Operation USA. Both non-profits provide children overseas with vitamins necessary for their survival.

In creating Coby Cares, David continues his late wife’s legacy of helping children. Coby Cares is a small, grass-roots foundation. There is no overhead; the foundation functions as a facilitator between generous donors and children that are in need. Where many non-profits’ spend a large percentage of their funds on promotions and staff, Coby Cares Foundation is dedicated to using 100% of all donated monies directly towards helping children Internationally and within the United States.

Here is an example of how Coby Cares Foundation functions. We work with the California Community Foundation in reviewing a multitude of charity organizations and various requests for grants. The members of the Coby Cares Foundation will select the recipients based on their needs and ideas focused on “Coby’s compassionate way of life”. The Coby Cares Foundation will then donate a specific amount to assist a charity in reaching their goal. The money will then go directly to the charity or cause.

The Coby Care Foundation website will keep the donors up-to-date on the charities benefiting from their generosity. It is simple, effective, and every dime goes to the designated philanthropic cause. Coby Cares Foundation will never be a big-name foundation with grandiose fundraisers and celebrity endorsements. Instead, we will utilize any donated money to help children in need. It is as simple as that!

This is Coby’s mission, and Coby Cares guarantee.

Paradise Family Fund

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Having grown up without a great deal of financial resources, I know firsthand how a little can go a long way. My father worked long and hard, well into his seventies before retirement, and both he and my mother, who raised three boys, busied themselves all their lives, to the extent they were able, with civic and community affairs – from scouting to charities and synagogue to the local School District and government – in my Dad’s case, pretty much until the day he died at the age of 100. All the while, they remained die-hard Chicago sports fans as well.

Both came from poor families. Their own parents – my grandparents – struggled to provide for their families and died with little but keepsakes to pass on.

Inspired by the lives they led, The Paradise Family Fund will seek to provide a modest, but hopefully significant, infusion of financial resources where it can do the maximum good for institutions and organizations where a little might go a long way. While it’s possible that the fund may grow to a point where five-figure and larger amounts may someday become feasible, the Fund will primarily disperse 3- and 4-figure amounts, with an emphasis on education, its synergy with the arts, and endeavors that promote active engagement in a sense of community and furthering kindness in its endless struggle against cruelty.

Sara Nelson Fund / SAMO
“Mothers of the Mountains” Susan Nelson, Margo Feuer and Jill Swift

The Sara Nelson Fund has been established to support Santa Monica Mountains Fund (SAMO Fund), founded in 1988 and the official partner of the National Park Service for the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area — the largest and most diverse urban park in the United States. Encompassing over 500 miles of trail systems and nearly 160,000 acres of open space, it extends from the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County, along the entire Malibu coast, and stretches through the hills surrounding the Palisades, Brentwood, Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Bowl.

The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area was the brainchild and lifelong passion of Sara’s mother, committed environmental activist Susan Nelson, who started the “Friends of the Santa Monica Mountains, Parks and Seashore” group in 1964 in response to proposed large-scale development planned in the Malibu hills. Over the next decade she joined forces with two other local activists, Margo Feuer and Jill Swift, and together the three fought tirelessly against developers and political opposition to put forward Congressional legislation to establish the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in 1978, followed by the creation of Santa Monica Mountains Fund ten years later to make sure these beautiful wildlands are maintained, preserved and protected for future generations.

Anyone who has spent a day at the beach in Malibu, hiked in Runyon Canyon or the Westridge Trailhead, or gone horseback riding in Will Rogers State Park has been the beneficiary of all the hard work and dedication of Susan and her fellow “Mothers of the Mountains.” They are directly responsible for creating and sustaining this vast, unique natural habitat that’s a key part of what makes Southern California the envy of the world, attracting nearly one million visitors a year.

However, the challenges facing the Santa Monica Mountains continue, resulting from the new normal of nearly year-round wildfire seasons, habitat loss and shrinking federal budgets. It makes SAMO Fund’s perpetuation of what Nelson and her fellow “Mothers” created even more critical, and why Susan’s daughter, Sara, who carried on her mother’s commitment by supporting and chairing the board of SAMO Fund for many years, has endowed this Fund.

Supporting the Sara Nelson Fund will not only honor Susan Nelson’s legacy, but will directly provide the steady, ongoing flow of unrestricted resources necessary to ensure SAMO Fund’s programs and its continuing of support of the SMMNRA.

Gloria Molina Legacy Fund

Gloria Molina was an unparalleled woman of many talents and titles – a political trailblazer, Chicana activist, masterful policy maker, relentless political watchdog, dynamic artist, and a true Chingona. She was a passionate woman who dedicated her entire life and heart to Angelinos, particularly those on the Eastside.

Gloria’s political career was a series of inspirational firsts – the first Latina Assembly member in California, the first Latina on the Los Angeles City Council, and the first Latina on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where she represented the First District for over 20 years. Through this career of firsts, Gloria paved the way for many Latino political representatives who follow in her footsteps. Gloria was publicly known for keeping bureaucrats, developers and colleagues accountable, responsive and honest. She fought tirelessly and consistently for her constituents and community. Through her dedication to culture and the arts, we have her to thank for the development of LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, a community hub where people gather to celebrate Latino culture and history; The Wellness Center at the Historic General Hospital that offers free programs and services focusing on improving the health and well-being of local residents; Gloria Molina Grand Park, a free and accessible community green space in Downtown LA (recently named in her honor in 2023); not to mention dozens of libraries, community centers and so much more. Click here to learn more about Gloria’s career.

After retirement from the Board of Supervisors in 2014, she committed her time to philanthropic efforts, including joining the Board of Directors of the California Community Foundation in which she served as Chair of the Board from 2021-2023. She supported many arts organizations in East Los Angeles, from local community theater, Casa 0101 to Self Help Graphics and Arts, an organization that fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latino artists. She raised the bar for cultural institutions in Los Angeles, ensuring that LA Plaza expand its footprint and storytelling platform, ideating LA Cocina, a space dedicated to teaching and celebrating Mexican cuisine. Although we lost Gloria to cancer on May 14, 2023, her dedication and legacy to her community was nowhere near complete.

The Gloria Molina Legacy Fund will aim to keep her philanthropic and mission-driven passions alive, supporting causes that were not only important to her, but also important to her beloved family. Your generous support of this fund will provide grant opportunities for nonprofit organizations supporting children, families, arts education and equal opportunities for Angelinos and beyond.

Anna Cox passed away peacefully in April of this year. She was a passionate wife, mother, grandmother, friend, colleague and mentor. She led with creativity and wholehearted empathy in all her endeavors. Her passion and steadfast belief drove Anna to be a dedicated advocate for expanding health options and a defender of the freedom to access them.

Introduced to homeopathy in a bio-physics class at the American University of Complementary Medicine where she earned her doctorate, she subsequently established an innovative and evidence-based practice in classical homeopathy in Los Angeles. Through her pioneering practice, she drove unprecedented healing with homeopathy, transforming hundreds of lives of those she helped heal.

Beyond her practice, Anna dedicated her life to fostering a society where anyone could access and explore various healing modalities without judgment or restriction. She championed the cause of health freedom, believing in the fundamental right of individuals to make informed decisions about their well-being and advocating for the freedom to choose their healing paths.

To this end, she served on the board of directors for the North American Society of Homeopaths and worked with Americans for Homeopathic Choice and the National Health Freedom Coalition, leveraging her clear communication and coalition building to envision strategic paths to secure the right to practice and be treated by homeopathy and other alternative health modalities.

We mourn the loss of a courageous individual, but we also celebrate her life of purpose, conviction, learning, and healing. Her spirit will live on through those she inspired and whose lives she transformed, and her advocacy will continue to shape the discourse surrounding health and wellness for years to come.

Anna cherished her family and devoted her entire life to helping ensure they each lived life to its fullest. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Brad; her daughter Courtney, son-in-law Andrew and grandchildren Austin, Arlo, and Tallulah; and her son Spencer, to be daughter-in-law Elianne and grandchild Sylvia.

The Anna Cox Health Freedom Fund has been set up to further the important work of three key not-for-profit organizations; outlined with links below:

Beautiful Friends and Extended Community,

June 12th, 2023 marks the fourth anniversary since a drunk driver took our precious Ruby and Hart from us. Since those horrific, earliest days we’ve been searching for the best way to honor their legacies of joy, empathy, and kindness through some form of lasting philanthropy. We’ve come to realize that many of their talents and interests, from Ruby’s art and short stories to Hart’s ridiculous improvised characters and love of acting, began in very early childhood with an activity that most of us take for granted: reading and being read to. Ruby and Hart’s full but far too short lives were profoundly enriched by stories and characters that fueled their imaginations and filled their hearts.

Since publishing her first childrens’ novel, Gail has had the privilege of working with Writers and Artists Across the Country, an incredible organization that brings authors of childrens’ literature into underserved schools across the nation. Authors give their time, and WAAC provides every child with their own copy of the author’s book. Gail has seen firsthand the excitement that her visits have brought, and the way students’ beautiful faces light up when they’re given their very own copy to take home. Your donations will go toward sending authors into underserved schools all over the country with giant boxes of books, each of which will contain a Ruby and Hart Foundation bookplate. Students will be able to experience the joy of writing their name in their very own book.

Our goal is to raise $250,000 dollars so The Ruby and Hart Foundation can become a fully endowed fund that can meaningfully contribute to WAAC and organizations like it in perpetuity. We’re doing this under the umbrella of the California Community Fund. Please help us fulfill this ambitious and meaningful goal by giving generously. All details as to how to make fully tax-deductible contributions and learn how WAAC fulfills their extraordinary mission can be found below.

With love and gratitude, Gail & Colin

In Support Of
Ocean Conservation, Music and Military/Veterans

Robert K. Wrede, Esq. (Bob to friends and Rob to family) was passionate about music, the ocean and veterans. He reveled in telling stories about attending the Metropolitan Opera as a boy and knew the libretto of every major work. He surfed, kayaked and dove the majority of his life and continued boogie boarding until his early 70s. Rob was committed to veterans’ causes. He was a Captain in the Army, 82nd Airborne, graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and attended Cornell Law School as a veteran.

Rob had exceptional oratory skills and thrived in his chosen career as a trial attorney representing international corporations, professionals, actors and entertainment executives with zeal. His deep, robust voice and physique made him a force to reckon with in the courtroom.

Later in his career Rob shifted from “warrior” to “peacemaker.” He was awarded the first Master In Laws degree (L.L.M.) at the prestigious Strauss Institute of Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine Law School where he was an adjunct professor. As he grew older and wiser, he found he was extremely adept at resolving matters via mediation and reconciliation. It was not unusual for him to arrive home and report that the plaintiff and defendant were hugging one another at the end of the day.

Rob is survived by his wife Ranlyn Tilley Hill Wrede and their children Kendrick Randolph Wrede and Kendlyn Mercedes Wrede; and his adult children Christian Kendrick Wrede (Jason Szabo) and Suzanne Wrede, their mother Joan De Flumeri Wrede and his and Joan’s grandson Bastian Wrede. Rob believed each of his family members to be extraordinary. He was openly proud of them.

Robert Kendrick Wrede, aged 83, passed on June 24, 2023 as the sounds of classical music and opera hung suspended in the air.

Contributions will support Ocean Conservation, Music and Veterans in the places he lived, had friends, and returned to again and again. (Los Angeles/Santa Monica, Marin County, Ithaca and Sun Valley).
