We are Santa Monica

Santa Monica is a strong community with a long history of helping those in need. We Are Santa Monica Fund provides a critical and timely vehicle for neighbor-to-neighbor support, as members of our community struggle to get by, put food on the table, and care for their loved ones. The Fund also responds to longstanding racial equity concerns that—while not unique to our city—we must take action to address. Specifically, the Fund is focused on the following support projects:

COVID-19 Relief for Santa Monica Residents
Many Santa Monica residents have been impacted by the COVID-19 health emergency. Donations support impacts of COVID-19 on Santa Monica residents including housing and food insecurity.

Business Recovery
The COVID-19 health emergency has heavily impacted Santa Monica’s economy and in May, Santa Monica businesses experienced damages as a result of civil unrest. Donations to the We Are Santa Monica Fund provides support to efforts aimed at recovery so our businesses can continue to serve the community.

Black Agenda in Santa Monica
The health and economic impacts of COVID-19—and the national movement to rethink public safety—have laid bare the effect of structural racism on Black, indigenous, and other Americans of color. We Are Santa Monica offers donors a vehicle to support the Black Agenda in Santa Monica and citywide efforts to advance racial equity in our community.

Emergency Food Pantry at Virginia Avenue Park
The City of Santa Monica operates an emergency food pantry at Virginia Avenue Park to help serve those facing food insecurity in our community. Donations help serve families in need with nutritious food boxes. A donation of $50 supports a family for two weeks. A donation of $100 supports a family for an entire month.

The We Are Santa Monica Fund is a partnership between contributors, the California Community Foundation (CCF), and the City of Santa Monica. Donations by contributors may be designated to support one of the specified support projects: COVID-19 relief, business recovery efforts related to COVID-19 or the civil unrest, the Black Agenda in Santa Monica, and the Virginia Avenue Park Emergency Food Pantry. For donations made without a designated support project, at least 10% will be used to develop and implement the Black Agenda in Santa Monica, and the balance will be allocated to the support projects at the City’s discretion.

The City makes recommendations to CCF regarding distributions to eligible and operating nonprofits, or, in certain cases, City programs that benefit the community, and the funds must be used in connection with the associated support project. The City of Santa Monica has a decades-long track record of working closely with highly regarded nonprofits to ensure that funds and services are delivered efficiently and fairly. In the event that the City is the best partner for delivery of donated funds, it is eligible to receive allocations from the Fund, at CCF’s discretion.

If the We Are Santa Monica Fund receives contributions that exceed the amount that can be used in responding to the support projects, the City may recommend that the fund distribute the excess proceeds to non-profits or the City for general charitable uses that benefit the City’s residents.
