Sean Duffy

Sean DuffyArtist’s Statement

I use mass-produced consumer goods as raw material for artwork that examines life in Southern California to get to larger truths about the human condition. Much of my work is concerned with the way these objects are entwined in social interaction. A turntable becomes an active participant in a party; office furniture merges with the recreational spirit of the redwood deck; driving in cars separates us – even in a crowd – while working on them brings us together. My recent work (“Hilites,” “Third Motorcycle,” “International Playboy,” etc.) examines the superficial aspects of our relationship with motor vehicles – and our keen interest in their appearance.

As I have developed these vehicular pieces, I have become intrigued by both their internal mechanics and their potential as social machines. Now my goal is to move from works with an implied narrative element (for example, referencing my father’s racing career, my dirt bike years or a teen’s disappointing first car)toward ones that emphasize the direct experience of making work, which is, for me, often an intensely physical process.
