Fran Siegel

Fran SiegelArtist’s Statement

My drawings and installations explore the realm between physical and perceptual space. I work with lightweight materials such as paper, wire and string to create an open form of spatial drawing that engages solid and void. Ephemeral shifts in light and perspective play an important role in extending the presence of the work beyond its material borders.

The endless horizontal span, diverse geography and atmospheric conditions of Los Angeles are the phenomena that drive my current large-scale drawings. Aerial reference photographs that I take during flights into LAX expose abrupt transitions where geometrically designed communities collide with natural land contours. The city’s lack of a central master plan continues to evolve as a sprawling idiosyncratic structure. My accumulative and subtractive process of drawing, cutting and collage is a means to seam together multiple viewpoints. The drawings’ complexity generates an aesthetic expression of displacement, reflecting the rootless experience of life in the contemporary urban landscape.
