Ensuring Communities Have a Voice

Our Voice is Our Power

Los Angeles County is home to over 6 million eligible voters, but many face challenges in making their voices heard. The California Community Foundation (CCF) works to empower communities through voter education and civic engagement, helping residents shape policies that directly impact their lives and neighborhoods.

Almost $15 million
in grants, coordinated with 115+ community based organizations, has been provided by CCF for campaigns to count historically under-counted populations for the census

Bringing Lasting Change

Civic engagement is essential for building strong communities where all residents have agency and access to opportunity. The California Community Foundation (CCF) is dedicated to increasing voter participation and helping residents get involved in their local government and the decisions that most affect their lives. Our focus is on removing barriers to voting and civic participation, especially for those that have been historically excluded.

We support organizations that teach residents about voting, help them register, and show how their participation can shape policies on critical issues like housing, healthcare, and education. CCF also invests in training community leaders to advocate for their neighborhoods and speak up for local needs.

Powerful Innovations for Voter Organizing and Transformation (PIVOT) is a first-of-its-kind partnership between California’s leading organizers and funders to build political involvement in communities that have historically lacked access to power. Through this initiative, CCf is able to support innovative power building efforts by investing in their expansion of capacity, and in efforts to educate and engage new and disenfranchised voters.

By funding voter education programs and creating opportunities for residents to engage with policymakers, we make sure everyone has a chance to be heard. Our work is about more than voting—it’s about giving people the tools and confidence to lead and create a better future for their communities.

Public Policy and Civic Engagement

Our Public Policy and Civic Engagement programs focus on:

  • Building the capacity of nonprofits to deepen civic engagement within the communities they serve.
  • Partnering, leading and supporting collaborations in civic deserts, bringing community, policymakers and key stakeholders together to address complex problems, assess opportunities and develop and implement systems-level remedies.
  • We are launching a regional advocacy and community organizing effort in civic deserts to strengthen the nonprofit sector, support the development of a robust regional identity, encourage multi-sector collaboration on critical issues, and attract greater public and private investment in the region.

Our Strategic Priority Projects

Powerful Innovations for Voter Organizing and Transformation (PIVOT)

PIVOT is a collaborative initiative between California’s leading organizers and funders, designed to increase political involvement in underrepresented communities. This initiative invests in innovative strategies that expand organizational capacity, engage new and historically disenfranchised voters, and build long-term infrastructure to strengthen California’s multiracial democracy. Through PIVOT, we aim to create sustainable civic engagement efforts that drive structural reforms and amplify community voices across the state.

Community Connection Days

These events bring residents together for activities like voter registration drives, town halls, and policy workshops. The goal is to build community awareness and encourage collaboration for shared progress.

Community Leadership Training

This training program supports community members in becoming local leaders. Participants learn how to engage with policymakers, organize civic activities, and advocate for their community’s needs.

Policy Advocacy Support

This initiative partners with nonprofits to help residents push for fair policies on issues like housing, healthcare, and education. It equips people with the knowledge and tools to influence decision-making and secure the resources their communities need.
