Patty Chang
Artist’s Statement
I am an artist/educator who uses performance, video, installation and narrative forms when considering identity, gender, transnationalism, colonial legacies, the environment, large-scale infrastructural projects and impacted subjectivities.
I use autobiography and autofiction to connect shifts in scale between the intimate and the global. I want my work to help think about how certain pressures are put upon certain bodies, to be aware of how we relate to the world and how our perceptions are shaped.
I think about identities and bodies, shifting and otherwise. In particular, my work has often focused on Chinese American female experiences, immigrant experiences, transnational experiences and the space of intimacy through performance. When I was young, I wanted to use performance as a confrontation- to force a visibility of what is in front of you but not always acknowledged, the hypervisible and the invisible. Now I use it less as a confrontation, but still sometimes want to remind you about what you are looking at. I use the body to hold things together, to do so many things sometimes all at once, sometimes one at a time. When the body steps aside, what is it making space for?
Currently I’m working on a collaboration with an eco-feminist writer and a wildlife pathologist who does necropsies on porpoises. What can necropsies can tell us about death, endings, and climate change? How can my experience working with performance -intimacy, ritual, affective engagement- translate into ways of thinking through ocean health, scientist health and broader public engagements?
