Linda Arreola

Linda ArreolaArtist’s Statement

Influenced by the ancient architecture of Mesoamerica and the sleek lines of modernist design, I create geometric abstract paintings that explore spatial arrangements using an elemental and minimalist sensibility. They are a combination of scared geometry and minimalism where the beauty of the mathematical meshes with the poetics of space.

With a background in sculpture and architecture, I think of my paintings as constructions. Color, line and other elements are layered and arranged rather than rendered. The use of a grid as a foundation creates structure, allows for chaos and suggests a three dimensionality. I believe when things are at their most elemental, they reveal to us their essence.

My latest work has brought me closer to exploring structure and spirituality. The work more directly references architecture through the use of horizontal and vertical bands of elemental color. These vertical and horizontal forms refer to the foundational elements: the post and beam. Through their intersections they create portals or gateways into the mystery of unknown dimensions and are inspired by personal and socially engaging events.
