Artist’s Statement

A sense of place and a response to the age in which I am living have been major components of my work. The best art should open your mind. It should dare you to see things differently. The form of my work may change from video, to sculpture, installations to 2-D work; I use whatever best suits the idea.

My series GAZA: Mowing the Lawn signaled a shift from previous 3-D work to a photo-based 2-dimensional format. The intersection of photography and painting was an exciting leap forward. The line work used on the previous 3-D work was still present but now acted as a screen, obscuring the (sometimes) graphic nature of the photo beneath. This obfuscation of the photograph further emphasized my interest in challenging people to look at things they might not ordinarily look at. This technique was utilized in a recent piece, two 200 ft. panels for the LAX-Crenshaw METRO line, opening in 2018. Photographed in an around the area bordered by the 110 Freeway/Martin Luther King Boulevard to the North and Leimert Park to the South, the paintings explore this area’s architecture, its vibrancy, color and people in these diverse neighborhoods exposing their beauty, documenting change.
