Farrah Karapetian

Farrah KarapetianArtist’s Statement

My work is driven by minor personal narratives that question, inform, and destabilize hegemonic patterns of history. A documentary perspective on history might purport to know the truth of it, but mine elides that objectivity. I rely for clues instead on the mundane tasks and objects with which we each map our days, even in the context of major events. I isolate, enact, and mimic the experiences inscribed in my subjects’ bodies, in the hope that there is meaning in them outside of their original infrastructure. For what else do we hope – as humans – but for some semblance of significance to the moves we’ve made?

Photography especially is bound to facticity and illusory space, beguiling its viewers into its picture windows, its past tense. I tease out photography’s potential for presence: how can I handle the relationship between subject and artist, between viewer and artwork, so that each dynamic is more of a two-way street, something happening between each player in the here and now? Working cameralessly has made me reimagine the building blocks of my process and enabled me to render plastic the medium of photography, making abstract and relational discoveries en route to representational and metaphorical goals.
