I am interested in the various ways pre-determined structures can influence an otherwise intuitive process.
Using self-designed translation systems to allow a map, list of words, or page of musical notation to influence the making of a painting, sculpture, drawing, film/video, or sound installation.
The creation of objects and experiences that have value beyond my ideas, as open ended visual, audio, or time based experiences.
Fragments of note sequences have generated paintings, sound installations, sculpture, film/video work, and drawings. I use the simple idea that A=l, B=2, etc. to determine various types of activity. Thus, depending on the medium I am working with, an A note could equal a 1 inch line, a specific color, one movement of my hand, one sound, one minute, the letter A cut from a magazine, one frame of 16mm film, etc. Each work typically uses 100 – 300 notes/actions for its score. These determined moves also generate purely intuitive responses.
My visual work is engaged with early West Coast Abstraction of artists like Lee Mullican, Karl Benjamin, and German transplant Oskar Fischinger.
My sound work is engaged with the spatial and perceptual concerns of the California Light and Space artists of the late 1960’s.
My process is engaged with early Bay Area Conceptual approaches of artists like Terry Fox and Tom Marioni.
