My name is Julie Lequin. I am originally from Quebec and I have been living full time in Los Angeles for the past five years.
Since graduating from the MFA- Art program at Art Center College of Design in 2005, I have published, in December 2007, an artist book and DVD project with 2nd Cannons Publications, a growing artists’ book publisher based in Los Angeles. This project took 2 years of hard labor and I feel very happy and proud of the final product. The audience’s response has been incredibly positive. The Museum of Contemporary Arts (MoCA) bought a copy for their collection. I was also invited to do a book presentation at Skylight Books in Los Angeles and at the New York Book Fair organized by Printed Matters in New York.
In addition, my artwork has been shown at various venues such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Rental Gallery in New York, Optica in Montreal, Or Gallery in Vancouver, also in Sweden, Germany, and Australia.
I have also been involved with a few events curated by the non-profit art organization Outpost for Contemporary Art, and I recently designed the t-shirt for their members. Los Angeles is a very exciting place for me right now: I find inspiration and opportunities to exhibit and lecture, and my community is amazingly supportive and challenging.
While living in Los Angeles, I have taught all ages workshops at the Armory Center for the Arts, Lila (Lycee International de Los Angeles), and Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angeles. I have also been a guest lecturer in undergraduate art schools, such as UC Irvine, Claremont University, and Cal Arts. I really like teaching and interacting with my students: I find it very stimulating and rewarding. My artwork being performative, I enjoy speaking and interacting with a group of students.
I am currently working on a 3 channel video project scheduled to be shown as a solo exhibition at Raid Project, in Los Angeles, in May 2008. Moreover, I was recently awarded a 3 week residency at Art Omi in upstate New York for July, and a month at the Jentel residency program in Wyoming for December. I am looking forward to elaborating on new projects while visiting these new places.
