Judie Bamber

Judie BamberArtist’s Statement

The concerns of my work begin with representational image making. I’m interested in using formal elements of drawing, painting, and photography to intensify and question the contradictions of our perceptions of these media as well as our possible unconsidered preconceptions about the image represented. I find a place between mechanical record and human mark in order to explore different aspects of emotional connection and distance. All of my work finds a relationship between the image, the media chosen, and the time contained in the execution of the piece, which suggests a process of trying to know something intimately. My excavation of the image allows the viewer to take a similar journey.

I have always approached my work in series that consider a particular subject. In each series the subjects of the works are chosen for what is coded in the image as well as what is evoked that allows speculation about the subject beyond the image. The series I have included for this application are: “Are You My Mother”, my current body of work that considers the possibility of a representation of lesbian/female desire that presents erotic pleasure while acknowledging the problem of easy consumption of erotic images; and

“Seascapes” oil paintings that record the seductive qualities of realism, the fine line between realism and illusion, representation and abstraction, physical and emotional proximity.
