California Community Foundation Awards $5.5 Million to Shape Brighter Futures for All Angelenos

LOS ANGELES – January 11, 2019 – The California Community Foundation (CCF) awarded 46 grants totaling $5,476,500 to nonprofit organizations working to create a more equitable and prosperous Los Angeles County.

These grants include nearly $1.8 million to empower communities to pursue greater equity through civic engagement. Funding will support collective strategies aimed at strengthening education, research, organizing and leadership development efforts throughout the region, including South L.A., East L.A. and the San Fernando and Antelope Valley.

In addition, CCF’s civic engagement grants will also help L.A. communities prepare for the 2020 Census. Achieving an accurate count is critical to ensuring Los Angeles County receives its fair share of more than $75 billion in available resources. With its high concentration of historically undercounted communities – including communities of color and low-income, LGBTQ and homeless residents — Los Angeles is considered the nation’s hardest-to-count county.

CCF also made $2.2 million in grants to expand access to quality health services that meet the needs of our must vulnerable neighbors. This includes coordinating with the Protecting Immigrant Families campaign to educate and prepare immigrant and mixed-status families to deal with proposed changes to the public charge rule that would affect use of food assistance, Medi-Cal and other public benefits.

Grants also supported a wide variety of organizations working in vital areas such as improving K-12 and college educational outcomes, expanding the supply of affordable housing and protecting the rights and futures of immigrant communities.

In 2015, CCF made a pledge to grant $1 billion to Los Angeles County nonprofits by 2025. To date, the foundation and its donors have given more than $325 million.
