Denise Tom is CCF’s program officer for health. She helps manage the foundation’s $2.8 million Centinela Valley Medical and Community Funds, whose goal is to promote and improve the health and quality of life of children and adults living in the Centinela Valley – Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lennox, Los Angeles, El Segundo, Watts, Compton and Lawndale. Tom was previously a program manager and the foundation’s principal writer.
Before joining CCF in 2007, Tom was a program officer and journalism program specialist at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Prior to that, she spent 26 years in the newspaper industry. She was an award-winning editor at USA TODAY, winning an Exceptional Merit in Media Award in 1996, and a reporter for the Oakland Tribune.
Tom has a bachelor’s in journalism from San Francisco State University and a master’s in nonprofit management from Antioch University. She serves on both the advisory council of Antioch’s MA in nonprofit management program and the L.A. County Commission on Alcohol and Other Drugs.
