At our best, we have always been and will always be one nation, indivisible.
Whether from Oklahoma or Oaxaca, North Carolina or South Korea, people have always come to Los Angeles County to create better lives for themselves and their families. The passions, dreams and hard work of these diverse residents have helped build and define the Los Angeles region since before California became a state.
Today, immigrants continue to drive our identity and economy, making up one in three residents and half of our workforce. Studies show that the determination and entrepreneurship of these 3.5 million new Americans is key to our economic potential. And we believe that integrating them into L.A.’s civic, economic and social fabric is imperative for us to flourish and thrive.
Our Immigrant Integration Initiative brings together public, private and philanthropic partners through the Council on Immigrant Integration and has granted more than $10 million to local nonprofits serving L.A.’s vibrant immigrant communities. We have funded everything from English language literacy to civic leadership development to policy advocacy. Our efforts have helped 8,000 eligible immigrants transform their futures by applying for citizenship; 300,000 and counting to obtain California driver’s licenses.
We are committed to acting responsibly to emerging opportunities, helping support the implementation of federal deferred action programs that can empower more than half a million Angelenos to protect their families, earn a living and contribute to the future of their own communities.
