Program Areas

The foundation makes competitive grants in the five areas listed below. The goal, strategies and expected outcomes of each program area are listed on each page.

Through its competitive grantmaking process, the California Community Foundation emphasizes,
in particular, the following:
  • MEASURABLE RESULTS: We seek to partner with and support nonprofit organizations that create long-term solutions to the core causes of social, economic and educational inequity in Los Angeles County. Therefore, we place a high priority on organizations that can demonstrate and measure progress and change that ultimately result in positive outcomes for their constituents and communities.
  • MAXIMUM LEVERAGE: To increase the chance for success in achieving positive outcomes, we fund organizations that are capable of working with other partners (e.g., other nonprofit organizations, community leadership, public and private institutions and funders, etc.) in results-oriented collaborations.
  • HOLISTIC APPROACHES: Despite our five program areas and priorities, we strongly promote and support holistic, multidisciplinary and integrated methods that address local conditions.
  • HIGH-NEED PEOPLE AND PLACES: To ensure the inclusion of underrepresented geographic areas and individuals, we encourage organizations that represent and serve people and/or communities historically excluded from access to mainstream funding sources to submit Letters of Intent.
  • INSTITUTION BUILDING: Instead of traditional project-specific grantmaking, we prioritize a stronger nonprofit infrastructure in L.A. County by providing primarily core operating support to organizations whose work contributes to the solutions of local and countywide issues that are aligned with our priorities and program areas.
