Management Support Resources for Nonprofit Organizations
A number of management support organizations (MSOs) provide training, technical assistance, and financial assistance to nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles County. These MSOs help strengthen nonprofit capacity in the areas of:
- organizational growth
- strategic plan development
- board development and governance
- human resources planning and organizational realignment
- technological and informational systems planning
- staff and leadership development
- resource development and fundraising
- and program planning and evaluation
The following is a list of CCF-supported management support organizations that provide these and other types of services to Los Angeles County nonprofit organizations:
- California Budget Project (CBP): This nonpartisan, nonprofit organization engages in independent fiscal and policy analysis and public education with the goal of improving public policies affecting the economic and social well-being of low- and middle-income Californians. CBP provides nonprofit organizations and community stakeholders in Los Angeles County with state budget briefing papers and analyses to help nonprofits: (1) improve their understanding of the state budget process; and (2) be better equipped to mobilize their constituencies to advocate for budget proposals that improve the lives of low- and middle-income Californians.
- Center for Nonprofit Management of Southern California: Provides more than 200 management training workshops and classes for nonprofit professionals and board members each year, including a new strategic planning clinic series.
- CompassPoint: a San Francisco-based consulting, research and training organization providing nonprofits with management tools, strategies, and resources to lead change in their communities. Beginning in fall 2009, CompassPoint will begin to offer its signature Fundraising Academy for Communities of Color for nonprofit organization in Los Angeles.
- Grantsmanship Center: In conjunction with CCF and The Annenberg Foundation, offers Project Grantsmanship, a proposal writing and program management course.
- Executive Service Corps: Matches retired business/nonprofit professionals with nonprofit organizations for assistance with management support consulting projects; also offers the Executive Directors Leadership Institute for new nonprofit executives and is launching the Board Leaders Institute for new board chairs in conjunction with the Riordan Volunteer Leadership Development Program.
- Long Beach Nonprofit Partnership: Provides more than 30 management training workshops and classes for Long Beach area nonprofits each year.
- Nonprofit Finance Fund: The Nonprofit Finance Fund (NFF) is a national organization that provides both lending services and financial technical assistance including helping nonprofits create building reserves, cash reserves and endowments through its multiyear asset-building product. Beginning in fall 2009, the Nonprofit Finance Fund will begin offering technical assistance and lending services (including working capital loans) to Los Angeles area nonprofit organizations.
- Riordan Volunteer Leadership Development Program: In collaboration with Executive Service Corps, the LAJCC has launched a new Board Leaders Institute (BLI), to train new board chairs in their leadership roles. LAJCC will also continue its signature program, the Riordan Volunteer Leadership Development Program (RVLDP), in which young business professionals receive training and placement for service on nonprofit boards of directors. Also provides a matching service with program graduates and nonprofit organizations seeking new board members.
- Southern California Grantmakers: Is a regional membership association of private sector grantmakers whose mission is to support and advance effective and responsible philanthropy for the public good.
- Special Services for Groups: Is hosting a one-year pilot training and peer learning program for 9 grantees of the California Community and United Way of Greater Los Angeles on outcomes-based planning and evaluation through its Data and Census Center.
- Taproot Foundation:
Provides six-month “service grants”, which involve a selection process from nonprofit applicant organizations for specific pro-bono consulting services including marketing and branding, information technology, leadership development, strategic human resources planning and strategy management.
- Valley Nonprofit Resources: Provides training, technical assistance, specialized consulting, and peer learning opportunities for nonprofit organizations in the San Fernando Valley.
