California Community Foundation Announces Alvertha Penny as New Vice President of Programs
Los Angeles — The California Community Foundation announced today that it has appointed respected nonprofit consultant Alvertha Penny as its new vice president of programs. Penny will oversee the community foundation’s discretionary grantmaking activities and other special community projects.
Penny has served as interim vice president of programs at the foundation since January 2005. Prior to her work with the foundation, she headed Alvertha Penny & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic planning for nonprofits, and was the director, neighborhood improvement initiative and senior advisor to the president at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
Penny sits on the boards of the National Community Development Institute and the Nonprofit Finance Fund, and was awarded the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Fellowship and the Walter Kaitz Foundation Cable Television Management Fellowship.
“Alvertha’s tremendous knowledge and experience in the foundation and nonprofit fields make her a valuable addition to the community foundation,” said Antonia Hernández, president & CEO of the California Community Foundation. “Most importantly, she shares the foundation’s desire to make Los Angeles a place people are proud to call home.”
Established in 1915, the California Community Foundation is one of the largest and most active philanthropic organizations in Southern California, with assets of more than $750 million. In partnership with its donors, the foundation supports nonprofit organizations and public institutions with funds for health and human services, affordable housing, early childhood education, community arts and culture and other areas of need.
