Two-year support for programs and services of APF’s Military/Veterans and Pain Initiative that helps Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, their families and their caregivers learn more about, gain access to and successfully utilize resources that help manage or abate pain resulting from combat-related injuries. The American Pain Foundation (APF) began the Military/Veterans and Pain Initiative in 2004 to provide active military soldiers and veterans with educational information and support to improve their pain care, decrease their sense of isolation and encourage them to pursue a better quality of life for themselves and their families. APF also works to advance national and state legislation and policy to improve pain care and increase pain research for current and former members of the military.

1) Support of $400,000 to replace 10 15-passenger vans and purchase new vans and buses for activities involving service members and their families impacted by deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan; summer camp opportunities for children of junior enlisted Iraq and Afghanistan military OEF and OIF personnel.

2) Three-year support and $1,428,575 to expand Operation Hero, a program to support the academic, social and emotional needs of schoolchildren whose families must relocate due to OEF and OIF deployment.

The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) has provided support services to military service members and their families for more than 140 years, particularly focused on active duty junior-enlisted men and women. ASYMCA offers essential programs such as child care, hospital assistance, spouse support services, food services, computer training classes, health and wellness services and holiday meals, among many others.

Three-year support for the Pathway Home, a new residential outpatient, case-managed treatment program for returning California OEF and OIF veterans with service-related physical and psychological injuries, located at the Veterans Home of California-Yountville (VHC-Yountville). The Pathway Home will be managed as an independent program at Veterans Home of California as a project of Tides Center, with oversight by the California Department of Veterans Affairs. The California Department of Veterans Affairs assists veterans and their families in presenting their claims for veterans benefits under the laws of the United States; provides them with direct low-cost loans to acquire farms and homes; and provides the state's aged or disabled veterans with rehabilitative, residential and medical care and services in a home-like environment at the Veterans Home of California.

Comfort for America’ s Uniformed Services (CAUSE)

Support to design, outfit, implement and manage informational, recreational and entertainment-based lending libraries at three medical centers serving wounded OEF and OIF personnel.

Since 2003, CAUSE has offered programs designed to bring comfort and recreation into the lives of military men and women facing long journeys back to health. Located on the grounds of military medical centers, CAUSE programs reach hundreds of injured servicemen and servicewomen facing months of medical care and rehabilitation far from home and family.

Two-year support to pilot a demonstration project in California that helps returning OEF and OIF veterans with farming experience to enter the farming or agricultural industry through training and education, or assistance with finding quality jobs or acquiring land to start a new farm. The Farmer-Veteran Coalition, a program of Community Partners, seeks to help returning veterans find employment, training and places to heal on America’s farms. At the same time the coalition hopes that some of these young men and women become involved in sustainable farming and agricultural fields.

Mercy Medical Airlift

To support Mercy Medical Airlift's Air Compassion for Veterans program, which provides critical medical air transport service to troops, veterans and their families affected by military deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan. For more than 30 years, Mercy Medical Airlift works to ensure that no needy patient is denied access to distant specialized medical evaluation, diagnosis or treatment for lack of a means of long-distance medical air transportation. It also ensures that urgent long-distance air transportation is available in situations of compelling human need and homeland security emergencies.

Support to expand the awareness, capacity and use of the NVF's national Helpline and Los Angeles County service programs for veterans of military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to develop both public awareness of the critical issues facing today’s veterans and veterans’ awareness of NVF’s programs and services.

The National Veterans Foundation operates the nation’s only toll-free helpline for veterans and their families, offers public awareness programs spotlighting the needs of America’s veterans, and provides food, clothing, transportation, employment and other essential resources to veterans and their families in need. The organization began in 1985, originally as The Vietnam Veterans Aid Foundation.

National Veterans Legal Services Program

Three-year support to train, coordinate and mentor volunteer attorneys nationwide to represent former and current OEF and OIF service members in need of legal help with significant disability discharge issues or obtaining their rightful benefits. The National Veterans Legal Services Program is an independent, nonprofit, veterans service organization dedicated to ensuring that the U.S. government honors its commitment to veterans by providing them with the federal benefits they have earned through serving their country. NVLSP has been the voice of veterans’ rights for more than 25 years. Services include advocacy and training, education and pro bono litigation.

1) Three-year support for Operation Welcome Home, a comprehensive prevention program for Southern California-based OEF and OIF veterans and their families at risk of homelessness.

2) Three-year support of $1 million to establish the Veterans Court Project, a Los Angeles-based national alternative sentencing demonstration model that will provide customized case management and treatment services to OEF/OIF veterans who have committed crimes attributable to combat-related trauma, mental illness and/or addiction.

New Directions provides a wide variety of services for homeless veterans, including job training and placement, parenting and money management classes, legal and financial assistance, counseling, remedial education and resources for alumni. It has provided food, shelter and rehabilitation services since 1992 and serves more than 800 homeless veterans a year through four locations in Southern California.

ONE Freedom, Inc.

To support therapeutic and educational programs and services that help veterans of OEF and OIF understand, manage and heal from significant combat-related trauma and stress. Since 2003, ONE Freedom provides returning veterans and their families with meaningful education and training on prolonged stress, trauma and personal, self-managed skill sets for maintaining strength after service. Taught by a team of field experts, military and civilian, ONE Freedom helps participants explore strength through effective skills and balanced living, and provides tools and resources for ongoing personal learning and growth.

Operation MEND,

Three-year support of a UCLA program that provides world-class treatment and reconstruction of the severely disfiguring facial and head wounds faced by OEF/OIF combat personnel, by providing access to the nation’s top surgeons and specialists in the areas of facial and cranial reconstructive surgery. Operation MEND helps to treat severely burned U.S. military personnel who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. In partnership with the UCLA Medical Center and the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas, Operation MEND has helped soldiers like U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Octavio Sanchez. He was a victim of a roadside bomb in Ramadi and suffered third-degree burns over 70 percent of his face and body. Through Operation MEND, he underwent reconstructive surgery to rebuild his nose, lips and cheeks.

Support to expand the Asset Recovery Kit emergency relief program, an effort to steer needy military personnel and their families who have been deployed to Iraq and/or Afghanistan away from predatory lenders and toward personal economic improvement. The Pentagon Federal Credit Union Foundation’s goal is to ensure that those who have devoted their lives to military service have the skills and resources they need to secure a sound financial future for themselves and their families. It is committed to expanding the benefits of credit union membership to a wider range of people in a fair, responsible and dignified manner by teaching basic money management principles.

Project Return to Work, Inc.

Two-year support to expand both automated and in-person job counseling, training and placement services to severely injured and disabled military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. For more than a decade, Project Return to Work advocates work, education and benefits for newly enabled Americans including injured soldiers returning home from combat in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere around the world. Services include evaluation, training, placement, supported employment, service learning for active duty members, financial counseling and homebuyer education.

The Salvation Army, Southern California Division

Three-year support to expand case-managed housing, substance abuse recovery and integrated services to homeless OEF and OIF veterans and their families through the Liberty Program in Los Angeles County. The Salvation Army in Southern California annually serves more than 2 million people with programs that include food and shelter for the hungry and homeless, substance abuse rehabilitation, child and adult day care, summer camps, educational and enrichment programs for young people. The new Liberty Program was created to meet the needs of veterans returning home from OEF/OIF deployments. The Salvation Army has served vulnerable individuals and families for more than 120 years.

Two-year support to place permanently disabled OEF and OIF veterans in carefully developed “caring communities” nationwide, and financially support their reintegration needs.
Founded in 2007, Sentinels of Freedom provides four-year “life scholarships” to help vets with severe service-related injuries become self-sufficient as they face the everyday hardships of finding a home, continuing their education or going to work to support their families post-hospitalization.

1) Three-year support of $6 million for the "Talk, Listen, Connect" program that provides a broad range of critical support and education tools and resources to at least 400,000 families and caregivers with young children struggling to cope with multiple deployments and/or parents who return home changed from military service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2) Eighteen-month support of $750,00 to expand the successful "Talk, Listen, Connect" program.

Sesame Workshop is a nonprofit educational organization that seeks to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children worldwide by addressing their critical developmental needs. Created more than 30 years ago, the workshop develops innovative and engaging education content for television, radio, books, magazines, interactive media and outreach. Taking advantage of all forms of media and using those that are best suited to delivering a particular curriculum, the workshop effectively and efficiently reaches millions of children, parents, caregivers and educators ― locally, nationally and globally.

1) Support of $1,625,768 for the Iraq Veteran Project, which helps OEF and OIF veterans and their families access Veteran Affairs entitlements, medical benefits and other critical services for their unmet deployment-related needs through free professional legal advocacy and case management.

2) Three-year support and $3,547,905 to develop, plan and implement the Coalition to Support Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans, an effort to build infrastructure within the military support field through networking, training, professional development, conferences and other opportunities. Swords to Plowshares' services are primarily focused in Northern California but are offered nationwide.

Founded in 1974, Swords to Plowshares is a community-based, nonprofit organization that provides counseling and case management, employment and training, housing and legal assistance to more than 1,500 homeless and low-income veterans annually in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. It promotes and protects the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education and partnerships with local, state and national entities. Swords to Plowshares is the only veterans service agency in the United States that provides a full continuum of care to low-income and homeless veterans.

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS)

To support two Good Grief Camps for children and families of deceased Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom service members, and to hire and support a child services specialist.

In addition to the sessions for children, TAPS provides a support network and offers a wide range of programs and services to the families and friends of those who have died in service to America. TAPS caseworkers help families navigate a complicated bureaucracy to find solutions to difficult problems. Peer-based support programs help parents, siblings, friends and other loved ones address such issues as grief, trauma, suicide and more. TAPS was founded in 1994.

Three-year support for TIRR Foundation’s Project Victory, a collaborative outpatient rehabilitation and community reintegration program that provides cognitive, physical, psychological, vocational and educational services to aid OEF and OIF veterans who have sustained moderate to severe traumatic brain injury resulting from deployment. These services are for Texas and Louisiana veterans. The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research Foundation (TIRR Foundation), founded in 1987, works to improve the medical care of neurologically injured patients and impact the lives of those with physical disabilities through a number of initiatives and projects.

United Through Reading (formerly Family Literacy Foundation)

Three-year support to expand United Through Reading’s Military Program, an effort to strengthen the emotional bonds, communication and morale of military families facing combat-related separation by enabling parents to read aloud to their children on videotape. United Through Reading strives to develop supportive relationships and a love of reading for children by encouraging the read-aloud experience within families. Founded in 1989, its vision is that all children will feel the security of caring adult relationships and develop a love of reading through the experience of reading aloud.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation

To increase the scope and volume of immediate financial assistance to OEF and OIF families in crisis through the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Unmet Needs program; and to support the National Veterans Service program, which helps veterans returning to eight core military bases throughout the nation to apply for and secure critical VA benefits. For more than 100 years, the VFW Foundation works to improve the lives of all veterans, military service personnel, their families and communities through a wide variety of programs, including grants to help pay for such basic needs as rent, mortgage, utilities, medical treatment and food.

Three-year support of Warrior Traditions, a multi-agency, case-managed professional and peer support service program for OEF and OIF active duty personnel and veterans and their families facing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), homelessness, substance abuse and other trauma-related symptoms. These services are for military personnel and veterans in San Diego and the surrounding communities. Veterans Village of San Diego is dedicated to extending assistance to needy and homeless veterans of all wars and eras and their families by providing housing, food, clothing, substance abuse recovery and mental health counseling, job training and job search assistance.

Vets4Vets

1) One-year support and $556,000 to significantly expand Deep Democracy’s Vets4Vets program, offering intensive training for, provision of, and ongoing support to peer-to-peer emotional and mental health support groups for OEF and OIF veterans exclusively in communities nationwide.

2) Support of $600,000 to further expand current programs and services in 2008.

Founded in 2004, Vets4Vets is dedicated to helping Iraq and Afghanistan veterans heal from emotional wounds resulting from military deployment. It is a nonpartisan veterans’ peer support program and is also known as Deep Democracy.

1) Three-year support of Coming Together Around Military Families (CTAMF), a program to strengthen the resilience and coping capacity of young children and families who experience trauma and loss as a result of a family member's deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan.

2) Support of $490,797 to expand the project to include support and dissemination of CTAMF materials to National Guard and Reserve communities nationwide, and further the project’s reach into the military communities that currently participate.

Founded in 1977, Zero to Three supports the healthy development and well-being of infants, toddlers and their families by informing, educating and supporting the adults who influence them.
