CCF Funds Final Push for Census Outreach

Homepage archive, published 4/29/10

To target communities that have shown low census response rates including the Hollywood/Echo Park and Central City/Koreatown areas, CCF has granted more than $200,000 dollars to leading nonprofits in these communities to spread the word about the importance of census participation and opening doors to census workers who will soon stop by to count those who haven’t mailed in their census forms.  All of the organizations have been partnering with the Mayor’s Office of the 2010 Census to ensure that all Angelenos are counted and communities get the resources they need.

“Our response rates are among the lowest in the country and the stakes are extremely high if we don’t boost those numbers,” said Virginia Mosqueda, director of civic engagement at the foundation. “We risk losing a congressional seat and essential funding for our community if we are severely undercounted. Our partners are actively reaching out to their communities to ensure everyone is counted – regardless of immigration status, race or income.”

Grantees include New American Media, which will use its extensive network of ethnic press members to reach undercounted communities; Korean Immigrant Workers Advocates (KIWA), which will reach out in Koreatown along with two other partners; Consejo de Federaciones Mexicanas en Norteamérica (COFEM), which will reach out to Latino communities in Boyle Heights and cities of Southeast Los Angeles County. Please see below for a complete list of grantees and their grant amounts.

For the first time in census history, CCF and others have identified areas to target based on real-time data generated by Healthy City, a CCF census grantee. Read more about these target areas and how you can help to spread the word about the importance of being counted.
