CCF has awarded a one-year, $200,000 grant to Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit that helps underserved youth and former gang members to become productive members of the community.
“Homeboy has been instrumental in helping troubled youth turn their lives around,” said Antonia Hernández, president and CEO at the foundation.“We don’t normally make grants in December but we wanted to be responsive to an urgent need in the community from an organization that has an immensely positive impact on these young people’s lives.”
“We are thankful that the California Community Foundation understands how best to address the gang issue and, as a result, help us change the lives of those who may have lost hope,” said Father Greg Boyle, Homeboy Industries founder and executive director. “The foundation’s gift will have a tremendous impact on the work we do.”
Homeboy Industries is renowned for its commitment to addressing one of the country’s most troubling gang regions through job training, education and a variety of free services. To date, Homeboy has helped thousands of former gang members from more than half the known gangs in Los Angeles. Through CCF’s donor advised and discretionary funds, the foundation has made a total of $517,285 in grants to Homeboy throughout the years.
