The California Community Foundation has awarded $325,000 in one-year fellowships to 18 outstanding emerging and mid-career artists working in painting, sculpture, performance art, experimental film/video and multimedia. Seven emerging artists each received $15,000 fellowships and 11 mid-career artists each received $20,000 fellowships. An online art gallery profiles their artwork and the artists.
“These fellowships are about more than money and prestige – they’re about building our community and reflecting our experiences through artistic expression,” said Antonia Hernández, president and CEO of the foundation. “During difficult times like these, unrestricted financial support like the grants we offer are undeniably important to the vibrancy and sustainability of our arts community.”
“We have so many gifted artists in L.A. and it was hard to choose from all the talented applicants,” said selection panelist Karen Rapp, curator of the Vincent Price Art Museum. “The fellowship is a great financial opportunity but more than that, it welcomes these artists into a tradition of excellence and contributions to the community that can be hard to find as an individual artist.”
Fellows’ disciplines and experiences range broadly; the commonality among them is their commitment to Los Angeles as a place to make and exhibit their art. Explore the fellows' work and learn more about the artists at CCF's online art gallery.
Fellows were selected by two 4-member panels of local artists, curators and arts experts from a pool of 441 applicants. The panels included: Julie Deamer, executive director, Outpost for Contemporary Art; Ciara Ennis, director & curator, Pitzer Art Galleries; Leo Garcia, executive director & artistic director, Highways Performance Space; Ryan Inouye, curatorial assistant, Roy and Edna Disney/Cal Arts Theatre (REDCAT); Ronald Lopez, program coordinator, 18th Street Arts Center; Elana Mann, 2009 Fellowships for Visual Artists recipient; Sandeep Mukherjee, 2009 Fellowships for Visual Artists recipient; Karen Rapp, museum director, Vincent Price Art Museum - East Los Angeles Community College. Leslie Ito, CCF program officer for the arts, staffed the panel.
CCF’s Fellowships for Visual Artists is in its 22nd year and has named 175 fellows since its inception. The fellowships are made possible by the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, the Brody Arts Fund, the Atlass Fund, the Joan Palevsky Endowment for the Future of Los Angeles, the T.M. and R.W. Brown Fund, the Harry J. Volk Fund and other CCF funds.
