What Are They?

Scholarship funds allow you to make merit-, need- or academic-based scholarship awards to individual students. With a scholarship fund, you can establish the criteria for selecting scholarship recipients and identify a partnering organization that best fits with the student population you want to support.

The community foundation offers two types of scholarship funds, restricted and donor advised.

Several factors influence which fund type is right for you, including the size of your fund, whether or not you want to identify the criteria or student population to receive awards, and whether you wish to partner with an organization to select or nominate qualified scholars. Our philanthropic services staff helps you decide which is appropriate for your scholarship goals.

The community foundation is home to approximately 150 scholarship funds. Collectively, these funds constitute one of the largest and most diverse scholarship programs on the West Coast.

The more than $2 million in annual scholarship grants awarded through our scholarship funds represents a tremendous financial resource to students in Los Angeles and beyond.

• Our scholarships can support students of all ages who are obtaining their education and degrees at every level in the educational system.
• Currently, a scholarship fund at the community foundation is considered nondiscriminatory even if it benefits a limited group of people, such as women, minorities or residents of a particular community.
• If you’re interested in a comprehensive approach to helping scholars succeed, the community foundation is also able to help you identify and partner with nonprofit organizations that sponsor college preparation activities such as tutoring, test preparation, mentoring and more.
