California Community Foundation Names
John E. Kobara Senior Vice President

April 9, 2008 - The California Community Foundation (CCF) named John E. Kobara senior vice president of external and donor relations. Kobara is a longtime leader in Los Angeles civic and community affairs. Kobara has held executive level positions in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. He has led three startups, headed external affairs for UCLA, and served as president of Big Brothers Big Sisters for the greater L.A. area. He serves on a wide variety of charitable and corporate boards, including the Japanese American National Museum, Capital Group’s Endowments, Homeland Security Advisory Council for Region 1, and Walden University.

Kobara succeeds Peter Dunn, vice president of development who will leave the foundation after 12 years to become president and CEO of the Central New York Community Foundation in Syracuse, N.Y. Kobara will serve as the chief development and marketing officer for CCF and oversee the foundations’ efforts to raise funds, serve and expand the donor base, as well as promote the foundation’s impact in the community through the media, publications and Web site.

Joan Palevsky, An Enduring Legacy

In October 2006, the California Community Foundation announced a historic $257 million bequest from the late philanthropist Joan Palevsky — the single largest gift the foundation has received since it was established in 1915. The donation enabled the foundation to double its competitive grantmaking to $25 million a year and established the Joan Palevsky Endowment for the Future of Los Angeles. Read more.

Although you’re able to support today’s needs through your fund at the foundation, it also is important to be able to address the ever-changing needs of our community. Unrestricted assets allow the foundation to meet the needs of a future we cannot foresee 10, 50 or even 100 years from now.

That flexibility was the reason the foundation’s founder left to CCF an unrestricted gift that is actively giving grants today. The California Community Foundation was founded in 1915 by Security Pacific Bank president Joseph Sartori. While the bank no longer exists, the fund that he and his wife established through their estate still does. The Joseph F. & Margaret R. Sartori Fund is an unrestricted fund that continues to make grants to local nonprofits. The Sartoris trusted in the permanence of the community foundation and in the decisions their successors would make to address current and future community needs with unrestricted assets.
