Children's Health Initiative
The Children's Health Initiative of Greater Los Angeles is a
three-year expansion of health coverage for children who are
without health insurance, with the goal of attaining a permanent,
long-term solution to 100 percent coverage of all children.
An estimated 350,000 children ages 18 and younger in Los Angeles
County do not have health insurance. Almost 75 percent of these kids
are eligible, but not enrolled in existing public health programs.
Children without health insurance are less healthy than their
insured counterparts. They are 500 percent more likely to depend
on emergency rooms as a source of regular care, and 200 percent
less likely to get needed prescription medicines or glasses.

Background on Initiative
The Children's Health Initiative Coalition is a public-private
group of health care providers, employers, business leaders,
advocacy groups, foundations, public health officials, labor
unions and educators who have come together to create and support
this effort. L.A. Care Health Plan, The California Endowment,
and the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services are
the three co-conveners of the group, providing leadership and
support. The California Community Foundation is proud to be
a coalition participant and a fiscal sponsor for the initiative.
In addition to enrolling eligible children for health coverage,
the initiative works with the greater Los Angeles community,
government leaders and anyone who cares about keeping our children
healthy, to encourage public policies that assure no child has
to go without medical care. The coalition believes that over
time, bolstered by the success of its three-year expansion of
coverage, it will be able to gain support for a permanent, long-term
solution to covering uninsured children.
