Special Needs Fund
There are about 50,000 children in the foster care system in Los
Angeles (formally called the Los Angeles Dependency System), most
of whom have few, if any, financial resources. These children
are eligible for financial assistance for special needs through
the Special Needs Fund.
This fund was established to meet a "special need" many
of the things considered vital components of growing up are out
of reach for children in the foster care system. Special needs
of the past have included: an article of clothing, a pair of glasses,
limited dental care, and tickets to a baseball game.
This fund is designed to fill in where no other resources are
available to meet the needs of foster children. Judicial officers,
attorneys and social workers may nominate a child in foster care
for a grant up to $250 to supply childhood essentials.
The fund has provided children in the Dependency system with
this support since 2000. In order to continue meeting the needs
of these children, contributions are encouraged.
