Reading By 9 Fund
A project of the Los Angeles Times, Reading By 9 helps children
in Southern California learn to read with a goal of having
95% of kids reading English at grade level by age nine.
This is a tremendous challenge: four out of five Southern California
third graders do not read at grade level. Research shows that
children who fail to read by the age of nine rarely catch up later.
In many cases, these children may never be able to realize their
full potential or contribute and participate fully in our society.
In addition to providing reading resources for kids in the paper, the Los Angeles Times' Reading By Nine Fund helps get volunteers in schools and provides books and supplies. Volunteers work with partner organization Friends of the School Volunteer Program, which provides training and coordination. People from all over the area contribute books through the twice-yearly book drive.
The Reading by 9 Fund accepts donations to help buy books and provide other classroom services.
